Parachuting Principals

Monday the 18th of March 2019.
Mark this date! This may be the day that the apex Primary & Secondary School in the country could be brought crumbling to its knees. The day that the entire public education system in Sri Lanka could disintegrate. The day that the dreams and aspirations of thousands of alumni, present and future students, could be shattered.

Over 7400 Students, 375 teachers, A 37-acre campus - very likely that you never knew this stat! Yes, we are talking about Royal College. The 184-year-old hallowed institution where your lusty throats raised a cheer to past Principals Hartley, Harward, Marsh and Boake. But, will you continue to sing such praises next week?

It is reliably learnt that on Monday, a 33-year-old man will walk into the Principal’s office. He’s not there to seek admission for his sons. He’s not there to get his leaving certificate. He’s there to sit in the Principal’s seat! He’s the individual that the Education Ministry has dubiously selected as the most suitable, most experienced, most mature, most senior officer of the Sri Lanka Education Administrators Service (SLEAS), to manage this large institution.

Why is his selection dubious? He was chosen via a customized marking scheme that 2 Education Ministry additional secretaries with questionable track records, formulated. This tailor-made scheme to place their henchmen/stooges in several superior schools of the country, has now been annulled by the Public Service Commission. Notwithstanding this instruction, the powers-that-be, intend installing this ‘infant within the system’ as the acting Principal.

How can an individual who joined the SLEAS late in 2014, possessing just over 2 years’ experience as a Principal, tackle the day-to-day issues of running the largest school and premier educational institution in the country?

Have the defined processes covering the requisite criteria and conventional practices been ignored in the grand scheme of appointing totally inexperienced cronies, lacking a track record in administration?

Are these the accepted norms and standards of administration that will determine the future of the Education System in SL?

Representations, appeals and discussions have been of no avail and the band wagon marches on regardless!

  2. Its evident that the standard of the college has gone down badly within the last decade. If these kinda things are going to happen continuously , we cannot stop the college being yet another national school like Ananda or Nalanda.
